Borghetto sul Mincio (VR)
Discovering the small village suspended between Verona and Mantua, where to stay and what to do to best enjoy its long medieval history.
Part of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, Borghetto sul Mincio is one of the most evocative destinations in Italy thanks to its ancient fortifications, the wheel mills overlooking the river and its imposing Scaligero Castle dating back to the 13th century.
Also famous for its food and wine offerings and, in particular, pumpkin tortelli, a typical dish of Mantua cuisine, the small village is the perfect destination for a romantic break, preferably during the week, to better enjoy its silence and charm timeless.
These walls tell of 1200 years of conquests, victories and trade, they tell of love stories and dreams that have come true.
Here, you can stay at the Corte Regia Relais & Spa, a charming hotel housed in an ancient complex that once housed the Gastald, the customs officer responsible for collecting taxes and supervising the river and land traffic that crossed there.
Its marvelous Infinity swimming pool, with partially heated water, which, thanks to its position, allows guests to enjoy the magical sensation of immersing themselves in the Mincio river that embraces the structure.
A little secret: a few places a day are available for lunch in its restaurant even for those who are not staying in the structure, an opportunity to be seized immediately to enjoy the wonder of the village in total privacy and relaxation, perhaps ordering the excellent trio of tortelli with a local wine.
Alternatively, you can book a table along the river at the Antica Locanda Mincio, a member of the “Historical Places of Italy”, under whose foundations rest the remains of the Templar thaberna. In fact, in the 13th century the village was taken over by the order of the Knights Templar who founded its own Preceptory there to control the ford and assist the numerous pilgrims who crossed the Po Valley on their way to the great destinations of medieval spirituality.
A few minutes from Borghetto, there is another wonder: Parco Giardino Sigurtà, whose origins lie in a “brolo cinto de muro” from 1417, a place where patrician families lived with their servants, and which illustrious owners, from the marquises Maffei to the Sigurtà family have made one of the most beautiful parks in the world.
Opened to the public in 1978, its 60 hectares have received multiple awards, from that of the Most Beautiful Park in Italy and Europe to the Best Attraction in the World in 2020, and it is truly unmissable for its blooms, from the million tulips up to the avenue populated with 30,000 roses.
And to visit it you can opt for electric golf carts, which accommodate a maximum of 4 people each, comfortable and very chic to see it all in comfort.
Truly wonderful.
