In Scomigo, among the marvelous panoramic hills just a stone's throw from Conegliano, L'Antica Quercia is an enchanted world, a natural oasis nestled in a wine-producing area overlooking the Dolomites and bathed in sea air under the benevolent influence of a centuries-old oak tree.

L’Antica Quercia is the only winery with single-block biodynamic vineyards in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene appellation.

Over 30 hectares of vineyards where wine, grappa, olive oil, and pomegranate juice are produced fully respecting nature and its rhythms, in the shade of magical, silent guardians: two oak trees, 400 and 200 years old, that watch over the estate’s land from above and have blessed its every historical transition.

The most beautiful dreams are born in the shade of a big tree.

(Claudio Francavilla)

The Francavilla Family’s Dream

While the agricultural history of these lands is lost in the dawn of time, the winery was founded in 1967 and took on a new dimension in 2001 when it was purchased by Claudio Francavilla’s family. Claudio fell in love with it so much that he made it his home, dreaming of creating “a perfect ecosystem where man and nature could coexist in total harmony and beauty.”

Starting with “clean” soil. The company has, in fact, achieved organic certification in 2007 and, since 2018, has practiced biodynamic agriculture. It uses manual grape harvesting with yields averaging 10,000 kilograms per hectare, particularly low for this production area. It also employs the green manure technique, which involves sowing different plants between the vines to naturally strengthen them. As evidenced by the two oak trees, vigilant of quality, which, having their roots in the same soil, would not otherwise live so luxuriantly.

The Wines: the elegance of the method and the “ancient” bubbles

L’Antica Quercia wines are renowned for their verticality, flavor, and purity. This philosophy is  encapsulated in Su Alto, the ancestral soul of these hills produced with indigenous yeasts in the first fermentation, just as it was once done, in A, a Prosecco DOCG brut on the lees, and in Q, a sparkling wine made from grapes macerated with the lees.

Other wines from the estate include the Prosecco DOCG brut Matiù, the extra dry Ariò, and Bruscade, the Colli di Conegliano DOCG red blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and 10% Marzemino.

La Ghiandaia Farmhouse and the Panoramic Walk

Part of the estate, inaugurated in late 2025, La Ghiandaia Farmhouse is the residence with eight splendid rooms that completes the world of L’Antica Quercia, where the “terroir” has even become a distinctive element of the design, as artist Isabella Breda has used it to create highly captivating textured walls.

The L’Antica Quercia winery is connected to La Ghiandaia by a panoramic walk that is an integral part of the experience, a path of approximately 1 km through the vineyards and offering marvelous views with two exceptional stops: the oak trees, where you can pause and lose yourself in thought, taking advantage of the benches and the swing, all made of reclaimed wood, which Claudio wanted to entice his guests to pause beneath the canopy and absorb all its benefits.

Wine Tastings at the Winery

In addition to enjoying a stay at La Ghiandaia, you can book tastings at the winery or shop at the L’Antica Quercia Wine Store. The beautiful tasting room offers tastings of the estate’s wines, accompanied by homemade bread and the estate’s own pomegranate oil and juice.

At L’Antica Quercia, you truly feel the magic of the surrounding environment. It’s no coincidence that the oak is a sacred tree in various cultures, associated with strength, protection, and ancestral wisdom. A symbol of power and endurance, it is used to increase stability, promote prosperity, and attract the blessings of nature spirits.

The Secret

Claudio entrusted an agronomist with studying the age of the oldest oak tree, which appears to be over 400 years old. However, there are numerous written accounts that speak of this tree, such as ancient documents that describe trade negotiations in Scomigo “sub quercum” (under the oak), or 19th-century maps that include the oak tree surrounded by vineyards, or, more recently, the writings of Mario Soldati, who in his 1970 book Vino al Vino (Wine to Wine) wrote, “…The Oak is so named after a real and beautiful oak tree that stands on the edge and towards the middle of the long ridge that forms the property.”
