La Terrazza Bar & Restaurant (TV) — Veneto Secrets

For over 100 years, La Terrazza, the terrace of the Albergo al Sole, a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, has been the romantic scene of some of the most famous love stories of history and literature.

The panoramic terrace is located in the centre of Asolo, a beautiful medieval town, famous for having been one of the most important intellectual centers in Europe. The town’s history is, in fact, interwoven with that of legendary romantic heroines: Caterina Cornaro, queen of Cyprus, Jerusalem and Armenia and Lady of Asolo since 1489, British writer and explorer Freya Stark, actress Eleonora Duse and writer Kuki Gallmann who inspired the film with Kim Basinger “I dreamed of Africa”.

Also, the hotel’s story is an all-female one: two sisters run it in the first half of the 20th century, then the structure remained closed for 25 years until 1996, when other two sisters, Elena and Silvia, took over the management of the hotel after a conservative restoration.

Renowned for its celebrity guests, the hotel witnessed the tainted love between writer Gabriele D’Annunzio and actress Eleonora Duse who in the 1920s was staying there during the restoration of her own villa. As a tribute to the artist, her beloved room, number 202, has been restored maintaining the same colors and original features of that time.

Today, the restaurant, run by Elena, an impeccable and caring host, along with a young and capable team, offers an innovative cuisine that stands out for the beautiful food plating as well as a careful selection of the best seasonal, fresh products.

Book lunch on the second Sunday of the month when the famous antique market takes place in the main square of Asolo, right at the foot of the terrace, or dinner on a clear-sky day to enjoy the fab sunset on the Regina Cornaro’s Castle.

The Secret

The renovation of the hotel, which lasted five years, has brought to light not only the original finishes of the building but also elements dating back to previous eras such as the suggestive 16th century Bacchus Grotto. So-called because on the vault there is a portrait of a man with a flask in his hand, here today it is possible to reserve romantic dinners for two.
