Gio’s Restaurant & Terrace (VE) — Veneto Secrets

One of the most romantic views of Venice, the possibility of eating overlooking the Grand Canal, and interiors worthy of a king and queen: welcome to Gio's Restaurant & Terrace.

Gio’s Restaurant & Terrace, located inside the 5-star luxury hotel The St. Regis Venice, offers one of the most beautiful views of Venice, with its wonderful terrace overlooking the Basilica della Salute on one side and Punta della Dogana on the other. The building that houses the restaurant, due to its splendid location, was in fact one of the first in the mid-19th century to be transformed into a luxury hotel.

In 1881 it became the Grand Hotel Britannia, chosen as a stay in the lagoon city by Claude Monet, who here painted some of his famous artworks, making the building enter the history of art for having the “most magnificent views of all Venice”, as his wife Alice wrote in a letter to his daughter. A beauty that can be enjoyed today for a very special lunch or a romantic dinner.

Shaking traditions. This is the philosophy behind every choice of The St. Regis Venice, a cultural bridge between the millenary tradition of the Serenissima and the latest trends in the field of haute cuisine, mixology and design.

The cuisine is orchestrated by the Executive Chef Giuseppe Ricci, originally from Puglia, with experience in London at Alain Ducasse’s iconic The Dorchester, who gives life to tasty dishes that reinterpret the Venetian tradition with international contemporaneity, such as Cuttlefish bonbon in Jerusalem artichoke with Saor sauce, the Raw pasta dumplings filled with Vicentina-style codfish, spiked squids and lovage or the Baked turbot fish sided with potato and leek cream, seared puntarelle and smoked caviar sauce.

The mise en place with Ginori 1735 porcelain and hand-blown Murano glasses inspired by artists such as Ai Weiwei and Carlo Scarpa is also a work of art.

The panoramic terrace, heated in winter, offers the priceless experience of eating right on the water, a few meters from the gondolas’ docking, and letting yourself be lulled by the magical gliding of the boats on the Grand Canal. For a romantic evening, you can book the table for two set up on a small private pier with independent access to enjoy absolute privacy and a truly breathtaking view.

Gio’s Restaurant’s gastronomic offer is completed by two spectacular bars: the St. Regis Bar, adjacent to the restaurant with a wonderful Italian garden and terrace that plays with the colors of the 1960s Dolce Vita, and the Arts Bar, an American bar with an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere where Bar Manager Facundo Gallegos prepares perfectly executed both modern and classic cocktails.

Among the signatures, we find the famous Santa Maria Bloody Mary inspired by the legendary Red Snapper with clarified tomato juice, Absolut Elyx Vodka, infusion of horseradish, Verjus du Perigord, drops of spicy and saline tincture, and Grappa Poli, or the very popular Spritz Trolley, a red Spritz based on Select, Veuve Clicquot Rich and aromatic essence.

Gio’s Restaurant is the perfect setting for a special treat whilst enjoying the magical nuances of the lagoon’s waters and sky that magically change color depending on the time of day, from sunrise to sunset, giving life to unique and wonderful views.

The Secret

The luxury hotel was completely renovated in 2019 on a project by Sagrada Interior Design Studio and the art curator Robin Greene who takes care of the selection of the works of art exhibited in the structure with the collaboration of the Berengo Studio. The interiors were inspired by Venetian’s most iconic craftsmenship as well as by the colors that Monet used for the canvases he painted in the Lagoon.
