At the base of the Rialto Bridge, the medieval Fondaco dei Tedeschi building comes to a new life as a luxury department store thanks to the rejuvenation undertaken by architects Rem Koolhaas and Jamie Fobert.
T (for Travel) Fondaco dei Tedeschi by DFS, which offers 4 floors of the coolest accessories, from Valentino to Aquazzura, hosts AMO, the cool café bistro fruit of the collaboration between the Alajmo brothers, of the famous Quadri Restaurant in Piazza San Marco, and designer Philippe Starck.
The eatery is just the perfect design for a cool break, enjoying some coffee and macarons or a pasta dish prepared with fresh ingredients coming from the nearby Rialto market. Do not miss Alajmo’s classics: the steam-cooked gourmet pizza and the savory potato cappuccino.
In the 1500s the facade of the Fondaco was frescoed by the famous painters Giorgione and Tiziano and the interiors adorned by Paolo Veronese and Jacopo Tintoretto; works of which, unfortunately, very few traces remain, today preserved at the Ca ‘D’Oro. On the walls and columns overlooking the central courtyard of the building, however, you can still admire the symbols that merchants used to engrave to indicate the compartments in which to deposit goods.
