Tenuta Le Cave (VR)
Set among the Amarone vineyards, Tenuta Le Cave enchants with its gaucho charm and the view over the generous nature of Valpolicella and the Lessinia natural park.
The Wine Relais with an organic farm, built according to the canons of sustainable architecture with recycled materials such as stones from old mountain huts in the area, takes its name from the historic white rock quarry of Tregnago, now transformed into a vineyard.
The central structure of the resort was, in fact, the house of the foreman with an attached cableway station to transport the rocks to the factory downstream and the provisions to the workers. The conservative restoration of the estate is made wonderfully contemporary by an interior design that combines the beauty of noble materials with a mix of original exotic objects “collected” by the owner Claudio Zorzi, a great traveler and lover of architecture, in Africa and the East, who has closely followed the whole project, together with architect Guido Pigozzi, making Le Cave one of the most beautiful design wine relais in Veneto.
The resort includes a restaurant with cellar, a tasting room, twelve rooms and three suites, some of which are housed in a magnificent design villa, a spa and a panoramic swimming pool with Roman-style columns and views of the surrounding hills and a gym overlooking the valley.
The Tenuta’s restaurant, open every evening, Saturday and Sunday also for lunch, pays homage to the territory with organic products and carefully selected meats. The menu offers dishes with a local soul, but with an international character, such as vegetable tempura with Parma ham, fusillone al Monte Veronese, fillet of venison, or grilled Coppa di Mora romagnola (the menu changes often based on seasonal ingredients).
In summer you can dine in the garden with a panoramic view over the valley.
The Estate produces an excellent selection of organic and biodynamic wines – from the famous Veronese reds Valpolicella, Ripasso and Amarone to the whites of the Soave lands or the bubbles from Garganega, Corvinone and Prosecco – thanks to the collaboration with the Fasoli Gino winery, a sure point of reference, since 1984, for the production of organic wines.
Absolutely must try Tasi, the 100% organic Prosecco, an invitation to be silent (in Venetian dialect “tasi” means “shut up”) and not to take yourself too seriously because at Le Cave wine is first of all fun and sharing.
A truly perfect location to live an experience of great charm for a weekend in Valpolicella or to savor lunch or dinner, perhaps preceded by a tasting, on the beautiful panoramic terrace in summer or in the charming room with wooden paneling in winter.
The Secret
The old quarry was founded in 1922 on behalf of the then Italcementi di Tregnago and remained active until 1975. In 2003, the area risked being transformed into a landfill for more than 1,000,000 cubic meters of special waste, a project later withdrawn in following opposition from 49 citizens’ organizations. Today the splendid organic vineyard, a highly acclaimed example of the recovery of an industrial area, is located right in the heart of what was the old quarry.
